“Like most individuals, I feel overwhelmed with responsibilities at work, family commitments and life in general. Do you have any tips to deal with these challenges?”
Mayo Clinic Answer From Edward T. Creagan, M.D.
Stress can feel overwhelming if you are not careful and mindful. Here are three tips that may be helpful.
1. Make a list to prioritize what is important. In general, most people can tackle only a certain number of challenges each day. Prioritize your list in order of importance to complete your most important tasks.
2. Avoid multitasking. Have a focus and keep a narrow area of concentration to get the job done. If you try to multitask, you can become sidetracked and it can take you much longer to complete the project.
3. The importance of self-care. Aim to get enough sleep, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. Try to get about seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
Fit in physical activity each day, ideally at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. You can even break it up into short chunks of time throughout the day. Try walking, swimming, biking or jogging on a treadmill.
Eat a healthy diet, including a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean poultry and fish. Avoid excess sugar, sodium and saturated and trans fats.
By using these simple tips, your stress may become more manageable.
