Suicide Healing and Bereavement Resources

After a suicide attempt, the person that made the attempt and the people around them might struggle with what to do or what to say.  They may be concerned that it may not be the right thing because they are angry, sad, or afraid. They may say nothing at all.

We have put together some helpful links to information that will help with ways to move forward toward connecting and healing.

After an Attempt

  • If you have made a suicide attempt
Maybe you have just returned home from the hospital, or you may be trying to make sense of what led you to consider suicide. The “why” of suicide is complex and answers may not come easy.

  • Supporting your loved one after a suicide attempt
When someone you love attempts to take their life, it can evoke a range of strong emotions. You may feel angry, sad, or afraid, or even feel as though you have experienced a trauma. Taking steps to take care of your own emotional needs at this time, possibly with the help of a mental health professional, will better prepare you for supporting your loved one through their recovery.

  • How to talk to a child about a suicide attempt in your family
If there has been a recent suicide attempt in your family, this may be one of the toughest experiences you and your children may ever face. It is important to take care of yourself, so that you are better able to care for your child. https://www.mirecc.va.gov/visn19/talk2kids/

Following a Suicide

Healing Conversations is a one-time visit (phone, virtual, in-person)  that connects those who have lost a loved one to suicide with trained volunteers who are also survivors of suicide loss. The goal of this connection is to help recent survivors navigate this challenging journey by offering support, connection and resources. (English only) AFSP Healing Conversations website
